I live in the East Bay (SF Bay) and I work for Physicians for Social Responsibility. I am convinced that the future is in smallish cities, and while the Bay Area has a lot to recommend it, I think Portland is one of the most likely places to do well in the awkward transition to come.
But, I live and work here, so for now this is home.
So I aspire to live sustainably in a real community, and Portland has a lot of promise.
What I'm doing about Peak Oil:
My organization (PSR) is helping hospitals across the Bay Area source their food organically and locally. I bike everywhere. I fret.

I wish I could say that I biked everywhere. But I walk a great deal. The advantage of living in a small (10,000) compact town. I love your comment about fretting. My goodness. How are things really on the ground where you are now at the end of this year f real transition?
I have just discovered this site. I have invited about 50 of my friends. Looks like it could use a little invigorating. There is much going on here also. Cheers
