Profile Information

Hometown:
Portland, Oregon
About Me:
I find that my interests in frugality, locality, and sustainability often overlap to the point that I can't draw lines between them anymore. I want to know my neighbors, I want to build community, and I want to SEE the difference it makes.
What I'm doing about Peak Oil:
*growing food organically
*slowly looking to reduce our household waste and emissions
*re-using more than ever
*experimenting with reductions I never thought I could tackle
*trying to add two more to the total number of people that will lead by example
*re-examing and questioning how we do nearly everything

early layers

It is now four months since my last blog and our oldest three chickens are five months old. Two of them begun laying last month, and are now laying fairly regularly. I am completely amazed, as all my hasty chicken education prepared me not to expect eggs until they are 7-9 months old. For anyone who is curious, the two that appear to be laying are both of our silver-laced Wyandottes. Not just eye candy anymore!

Chicken-raising has definitely been an experience thus far.

I do have to say that the first month has been as easy as I expected raising chicks to be. Neither my husband or I have ever raised or kept chickens, so we did a LOT of readi… Continue

indoor agriculture

So what happens when we run up on the limitations of available land to feed people? You know, besides ripping up parking lots and partial roads?
Another awesome idea gleaned from the commenters on Ecogeek.org: a hydroponic metropolis. While rather utopian, this idea has some good bones. Why not turn unused skycrapers into agricultural machines used to feed… Continue

Bio-immersion kindergarten

PeakOilBoy frequently talks about the need for people to learn how to grow their own food. In general discussion among peak oil and sustainability enthusiasts, I hear people lament that our kids are not learning where their food comes from and that many are unaware of the labor and resource chains behind their consumption. With that in mind, I was very pleased to read this

Indoor gray-water use

Ecogeek.org had a great post last month on using gray-water to flush your toilet. My s.o. and I are currently measuring to see if we can wedge the Aqus system into our teeny bathroom. I will give an update and/or photos if all
